Installing a dash cam is easier than most people think. In under 30 minutes, you can have a fully working dash cam recording your drives β no mechanic needed. This guide walks you through the entire process from unboxing to first recording.
What You'll Need
- Your dash cam (front and rear)
- The included power cable (usually USB-A to mini USB or USB-C)
- A trim removal tool or flat plastic card (optional)
- A microfiber cloth to clean the windshield
Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Position
Mount your front camera behind the rearview mirror β this keeps it out of your line of sight while still capturing the full road ahead. Clean the windshield with a microfiber cloth before attaching the mount to ensure the adhesive sticks properly.
Step 2: Attach the Mount
Peel the backing off the adhesive mount and press firmly against the windshield for 30 seconds. For suction cup mounts, press and lock the suction lever. Let the adhesive cure for at least 30 minutes before driving if using a 3M adhesive mount.
Step 3: Route the Power Cable
Run the power cable along the top of the windshield, then down the A-pillar (the trim between the windshield and the door). Tuck the cable under the trim using a plastic card or trim tool. Route it along the dashboard to the 12V socket or USB port.
Step 4: Install the Rear Camera (if applicable)
For dual dash cams like the F77, run the rear camera cable along the headliner from front to back. Tuck it neatly under the trim panels. Mount the rear camera on the rear windshield, centered and angled slightly downward for the best view.
Step 5: Power On and Configure
Plug in the power cable and start your car. The dash cam should power on automatically. Set the date, time, and video resolution in the settings menu. For WiFi-enabled models like the F77, download the companion app and connect via 5.8GHz WiFi to view footage on your phone.
Step 6: Test Your Recording
Take a short drive and check the footage. Adjust the camera angle if needed β aim for the horizon to be in the upper third of the frame. Check that both front and rear cameras are recording clearly.
That's it β you're now protected on every drive. A dash cam is one of the best investments you can make for peace of mind on the road.
