How to Prepare Your Car for Autumn: The Complete Checklist

How to Prepare Your Car for Autumn: The Complete Checklist

September arrives and most drivers don't think twice. But autumn is the most important time of year to check your car — before the cold, the rain, and the dark mornings arrive together.

This is the complete autumn car preparation checklist. Work through it once and you'll head into winter confident your car is ready.

1. Check Your Tyre Pressure

As temperatures drop, tyre pressure drops with them — approximately 1 PSI for every 5°C. Tyres that were correctly inflated in summer will be underinflated by autumn.

Check all four tyres against your vehicle's recommended pressure (found on the driver's door jamb sticker). Top up as needed. Do this every two weeks through autumn and winter.

2. Inspect Your Tyre Tread Depth

The legal minimum tread depth in Europe is 1.6mm. Safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm — especially on wet autumn roads where tread depth directly affects grip and braking distance.

Quick check: insert a 1€ coin into the tread groove. If you can see the gold rim, your tyres need replacing before winter.

3. Test Your Battery

Cold weather is the number one killer of car batteries. A battery that gets you through summer can fail on the first cold morning of autumn.

Have your battery tested at a garage or with a home battery tester. If it's over 3–4 years old, consider replacing it proactively. A new battery costs far less than a breakdown callout.

4. Check All Fluid Levels

Work through each fluid in turn:
- Engine oil: check level and condition. Change if it's due.
- Coolant/antifreeze: ensure it's mixed correctly for sub-zero temperatures.
- Brake fluid: check level and top up if needed.
- Windscreen washer fluid: switch to a winter formula that won't freeze in the reservoir or on the screen.
- Power steering fluid: check level if applicable.

5. Test All Lights

Autumn means darker mornings and earlier sunsets. This is when driving with a faulty bulb becomes both dangerous and illegal.

Check every light on the car: headlights (dipped and full beam), rear lights, brake lights, fog lights, and indicators. Replace any blown bulbs immediately.

6. Inspect Your Windscreen Wipers

Summer heat hardens wiper rubber. By autumn, many drivers have wipers that smear rather than clear — exactly when you need them most.

Test your wipers in rain. If they streak, skip, or squeak, replace them. Autumn-specific wiper blades are designed to handle wet leaves and road film.

7. Check Your Brakes

Wet roads reduce braking performance. If your brakes have been feeling soft, squeaky, or taking longer to respond, have them inspected before the rain arrives properly.

8. Prepare Your Windscreen

Check the windscreen for chips and cracks. Cold weather causes existing chips to spread rapidly — a small chip in September becomes a full crack by November. Repair chips while they're still small and cheap to fix.

Keep an ice scraper and de-icer in the car from October onwards.

9. Check Your 4WD or AWD System

If your vehicle has 4WD or AWD, verify it's engaging correctly before you need it on a slippery road. Test it on a quiet road before the conditions demand it.

10. Top Up Your Emergency Kit

Autumn and winter driving means a higher chance of being caught out. Keep a basic emergency kit in the boot:
- Tyre inflator
- Jump leads or a portable jump starter
- Hi-vis jacket
- Torch
- Blanket
- Bottled water

Summary

Autumn car preparation takes less than two hours and protects you through the worst months of the year. Work through this checklist once now — before the cold arrives — and you'll drive with confidence all the way through to spring.

The VELOX 160PSI Portable Tyre Inflator handles your tyre pressure top-ups in minutes, from your driveway, without a trip to the petrol station.
